I eat at Sansei several times a year. Well, every time I'm in Maui anyway. You have to love Aloha airline's $150 each way out of California but that's another review. Sansei has changed locations and is up in Kapalua now near the Ritz Carlton. The location is better, the place is more "hip" and happening and honestly the location now better fits the restaurant's persona. The sushi is arguably the best on the island. The Hyatt has a decent bar but that's completely different. Sansei has imaginative sushi and the fish itself is top notch! The service varies, but is usually good. On a "locals" night, (which I believe is Thursdays?) they have half off sushi and the place fills up with surfy types and hot women. Oops, that's not important here...They also have karaoke which is a riot. If you're visiting on vacation this locals / specials night is a nice change as hotel restaurants can get little dry and boring after a while. This is a fun energetic alternative. If you are visiting Maui do not miss this one. If you live there you already know this place is the best!
Pros: Great sushi / fun atmosphere / bad singing by amateurs
Cons: bad singing by amateurs / busy servers can neglect you if they are slammed
Price Range: $10 - $25

Sushi Lovers Pay Attention!
Very popular restaurant, but excellent food. If you go there before 6 p.m, they will give you 25% off, otherwise, the prices are pretty high. They had a visual on their dining table showing a certain type of sushi. Both my daughter and myself decided to order it. In the visual, it showed 3 very tasty looking crab rolls, but when our order came, we both got 2 small rolls. How deceiving. I did not complain since we had the 25% discount, but customers beware! Always ask how many pieces you get when ordering sushi. It varies from restaurant to restaurant.

This same restaurant chain on Oahu was much fancier and the portions were larger--or so they may have seemed compared to their two small crab rolls for $10.00.

Some really great best sushi
The location is out of the way, but very cozy. The staff was welcoming and our waitress was very helpful when giving the specials and updates on what’s good today. They offer quite a nice selection of Sake and other drinks to choose from. The Sansei Style Ahi Poke was wonderful. The variety of sushi, both maki and nigiri were well executed and very fresh. The several special rolls were very nice and well worth considering. The only detractors were the rather tight space around the tables and pace at which the food arrive. Since we ordered from the appetizers and the sushi list our food came out in a rather haphazard fashion. So, some of our party were actually almost done before the rest received their order, fortunately we share! Which brings me back to the food and the over all experience; it’s well worth the trip up the coast and I highly recommend it.

Really Good Sushi
Yum. The fish was great. The only problem was the wait. I was stuck outside in the rain for over 2 hours until i was finally seated.

Overpriced, Crowded, But Very Good
They have a reputation for serving some of the best sushi on the island. I myself prefer Oku's Sushi Bar at Kobe in Lahaina, but to each their own. Every time I've been to Sensei there's a huge wait and you can't make reservations (maybe you can now - I haven't been there in years). They recently moved locations to Kapalua next to the Ritz Carlton hotel.
